Speaking in English doesn’t have to be stressful, make you feel anxious, or embarrassed. I’ll coach you through conversation lessons, improve your listening so that you could watch a film in English, and help you understand what native speakers really mean without wasting years at conversation schools or language learning apps.

Learning a language takes a long time! But together we can do it the fastest way. My goal for all my students is to be independent learners. I’ll show you how to learn, as we study. We’ll study all four skills – speaking, listening, reading, writing – and also, pronunciation, vocabulary, and you’ll learn about English culture and how to think in English. I’ll show you how to use AI and vocabulary learning apps to make the most progress, and tell you what to do outside of class.
Listen and understand in real-time
Listening skills are highly connected to speaking and pronunciation, and I know this. We’ll tackle this challenge holistically, by improving your British accent, understanding how words and sentences are actually said. And we keep our listening materials at the perfect level for you as you progress – not too easy, not too hard. Soon you’ll be watching TV and films in English for study and for fun!
Speak with confidence
Fluent speaking doesn’t mean you have to be native. With regular output and a 1-on-1 teacher to guide you, you’ll be speaking fluently at 10x the speed of a group class. When you have a private teacher, they remember all your past lessons, your strengths and difficulties. They know when you struggling or just thinking. We learn languages together, like how a parent teaches their child. You wont progress if you change teachers every few months.

Lessons
How I teach
I teach in a modern style that encourages learner independence and real-world confidence. Learning a language is a big challenge and I coach my students through the process and adapt (and learn with you!) to give you the best possible learning experience.
Lessons are custom-made for each student after assessing the student’s needs. I continually assess students requirements to be able to adapt to their growth and development.
Ascend English uses a structured learning course to track progress overall and students are also expected to be active participants in their own learning outcomes.
Check your level

To begin studying, we’ll assess your level in order to personalise the lessons and studying materials for you. If you are using English for travel, speaking to friends, working with international companies, or to study or work in an English speaking country, it is best to let us know here.
Set learning goals

“I want to speak English” is a very big and broad goal. We’ll work together to break it down in to some more manageable targets. This will help keep you motivated as you get deep into your studies.
Classtime

In class you’ll study all of the four basic language skills - reading, listening, speaking, and writing. We’ll also break these skills down into smaller parts, such as speaking for fluency, or pronunciation.
You’ll get British accent training from Ben, and you’ll also be able to discuss what British people and culture is like and compare it to your own culture.

We’ll discuss how to guide your own studies. There will be homework from your lessons, but also we will offer advice for your further self-study. We’ll share tips on how to best use tools like AI and learning apps. And we’ll show you how to continue your studies without a teacher. (But we hope you’ll stay anyway!)
1-on-1 instruction

You’ll get the most speaking time, more than any other learning method. You’ll get direct, immediate feedback on your accent and speaking skills. Ben knows the importance of confidence when speaking - if something seems difficult for you, he’ll delay the feedback for later and show you what you’re doing well. He’ll also make note of areas that you struggle with and revisit them many times throughout your studies. Working 1-on-1 with a teacher long-term means that they have a vast, deep knowledge of what you have learnt and what you are capable of. We’ll know if your having a bad day or when you’re speaking with expert precision.

I am an English language teacher - qualified from University of Cambridge - with over 14 years of teaching experience. I have experience in teaching in Asia, Europe, and London, and have lead the exams preparation course at a major European language school. I also study how to teach (professional development) to offer the best, modern teaching practices to my students. I aim to get you to be an independent learner so you can continue to learn without a teacher.
Learning a language is a really big challenge. It can take many months and years. We’ll break it down into smaller steps, and celebrate your success on the way. I also learn languages myself (Japanese and Spanish) so I can understand how hard it is!
I know that it will take a long time and lots of dedication.

Where we are
I have taught English in Europe, China and Japan and, currently, I am based in Tokyo, Arakawa-ku. I am available for in-person lessons in the local area and also online lessons.
